So, it turns out that the lead writer for The Dark Descent and SOMA had actually left Frictional before this game was developed (Mikael Hedberg). After looking through some posts he made in past years regarding his work, it's apparent that he excelled at giving multiple facets of important information with the least exposition possible, and was highly creative in fitting his writing to the intended tone of the game. While watching this, I've been increasingly suspicious that SOMETHING must have happened over the years, because my god does this game have an unholy amount of unnecessary reading and dialogue (my opinion, of course). Losing Mikael apparently meant losing the "less is more" approach to their storytelling, and it REALLY shows here. In hindsight, I absolve Mark of any blame for speeding through this and eventually dropping it. Any fan of TDD will be disappointed in the inferior horror aspect, while fans of SOMA will be equally disappointed in the lack of plot twists and depth of story. This is by no means a bad game, but neither does it meet most people's expectations from Frictional's past works.
